Bishop Castle
ABOUT 2.5 HOURS FROM BROOMFIELD
Wetmore, Colorado

For 40 years, Jim Bishop has been building a castle on a mountainside in central Colorado. "Did it all myself, don't want any help," he says mechanically as he unloads a pile of rocks that he's hoisted to the 70-foot level on one of the castle towers.
Every year since 1969, Bishop has single-handedly gathered and set over 1000 tons of rock to create this stone and iron fortress in the middle of nowhere. Bishop calls it "a monument to hardworking people" and "America's biggest, one-man, physical project." "I always wanted a castle. Every man wants a castle," Bishop continues, his voice a broken record, answering the same questions he's obviously been asked thousands of times before.
It hasn't been easy. For most of those 40 years Bishop was engaged in a running battle with Washington bureaucrats over the rocks that he used, which came from the San Isabel National Forest that surrounds the castle property. Bishop felt that they were his for the taking, the government wanted to charge him per truckload.
Another bone of contention that stuck in Bishop's craw belonged to the Colorado state Chamber of Commerce, which refused to list Bishop Castle as an attraction in its official tourism guides.
Happily, those angry years are in the past. Both Uncle Sam and the Colorado Chamber now recognize that Bishop's dementia concretia is marketable, and that he's transformed some heavy, unwanted rocks into pure tourism gold.
The castle is a popular spot. "I been here three times," said one visitor. "I'm taking my kids to see what one man can do," said another. Other popular comments: "He's crazy," "Where does he get the time?" and "Where does he get the money?"
Bishop's goal is to complete his castle before he dies. He has no thought of slowing down. Although the castle is mostly a hollow shell of cemented rocks and ornamental ironwork (Jim Bishop's regular line of business), his future plans include a moat and a drawbridge, a roller coaster mounted on the castle's outer wall, a balcony big enough to hold an orchestra, and a second castle for Phoebe, his wife. (By 2005, Jim had added a large metal mesh dome on top of the castle, which rotates when visitors run in it.)
"I want to live as long as I can and keep building that castle bigger and bigger and bigger."
PARENTS ALERT: Bishop's Castle may look like Hogwarts, but Jim Bishop is no cuddly Dumbledore. He's a tough-talking man with strong, extreme beliefs, and sometimes he expresses them bluntly and loudly. If you or your children want to avoid potentially offensive rants (involving politics and race), you may want to steer clear.

Manitou Springs

Manitou Springs,

Hidden between Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak, America's most famous mountain, lies the magical town of Manitou Springs. "Manitou," a Native American word for "spirit," describes this beautiful mountain community. Eleven named mineral springs throughout town are fed by the snows of Pikes Peak. Long before white men traveled here, the Ute, Cheyenne and many other natives considered this area sacred.

Setting the stage for your visit

Behind you the prairies extend for 1,000s of dry miles to the east. Ahead the foothill’s jut up abruptly - green and rocky. As you head west streams between verdant slopes appear, dividing the foothills into canyons. Enter South Cheyenne Canyon – only five minutes from the very civilized Broadmoor Hotel – and you find yourself immediately surrounded and dwarfed by towering granite walls.

As you aproach the pillar of Hercules the walls are only 41 feet wide and tower to the height of 940 feet on the right and 790 feet on the left. Following the small stream you travel only one mile before coming to a sudden very wet end – the Seven Falls – cascading sharply down the pink granite.

Seven Falls is located in a natural box canyon. It is the only waterfall in Colorado listed in the National Geographic list of International waterfalls.

The one-mile drive winds along South Cheyenne Creek between steep cliffs covered with pines that at the narrowest are only 41 feet with interesting rock formations.

The falls are best viewed from the Eagle’s Nest Observation platform – accessed by the mountain elevator located inside the mountain.
One can also take the 224-step stairway.

Mount Shavano

1) Each year the Angel of Shavano appears on Mt. Shavano. The legend is of an Indian Princess and here love for her people. A long time ago, there was no water for the people. It had not rained all summer and it was driving the Indians from the land. The Indian Princess came to pray at the foot of the mountain for rain to end the drouth.
The Indian God of Plenty beckoned and the principle sacrificed herself so that her people could live. Each year, thereafter, the Princess – The Angel of Shavano – reappears and weeps once more for her people. Her tears – the melting snow – fall on the land below and make it fertile. (This is the first legend that I heard. I also heard that the “Indian Princess” was Chief Shavano’s daughter.)
4) The snow on one side of Mount Shavano forms the shape of an angel. Folklore is that long ago two young Indians, Little Drum and Stone Face, who were childhood friends, both fell in love with Corn Tassel, the prettiest Indian maiden. Friendship put aside, they decided the only solution was to fight to the death – the survivor free to pursue the affections of Corn Tassel. They met at the base of Mount Shavano for the battle. Corn Tassel discovered the plan and hurried to stop them. As she approached, Little Drum turned to look at her. Stone Face took advantage of this and stabbed Little Drum. With his last dying breath, Little Drum drew his bow and shot an arror through Corn Tassel’s heart. Despondent over the deaths of his lover and best friend, Stone Face wandered into the wilderness, never to be seen again.
Legend is that Corn Tassel’s spirit rose to the side of Mount Shavano, forming the snow angel.

Mountain Spirit Winery, Ltd.
ABOUT 3 HOURS FROM BROOMFIELD
by
Kathy Sullivan
Summary: Mountain Spirit Winery has a fine selection of wines. Not satisfied with producing only the usual quality wines, Mike and Terry Barkett have sought to make quality wines with a difference. Mountain Spirit Winery offers varietal and unique wines. Be sure to visit the gallery where wine tastings and local arts are available. The art gallery started in 1992 and moved to the new site in 2005.
Back in 1995, Terry and Michael Barkett began Mountain Spirit Winery. The winery is located at 8200 feet elevation and therefore they source grapes from another area of Colorado – the Western Slope vineyards. Currently the winery produces 2700 cases of wine.
Terry and Michael Barkett based the name of the winery and logo on “The Angel of Shavano Legend.” According to the story on the label of the wines, "A princess prayed for harvest rains to end an arid season below the spectacular Shavano Mountain Peaks. Offering herself as a sacrifice, she now reappears annually as the snow angel in the crevices of Mount Shavano, providing life-giving water to crops in the fertile valley below as she melts." Look carefully at the tallest peak in the photo. The tallest peak is Mt. Shavano. Down and to the left of the peak, is the slender angel with her arms stretched out. The painting for the label on some of the wine bottles is by Pat Oglesby.

Mountain Spirit Winery has two tasting rooms. One room is at the winery. A small tasting counter is close to the barrels and stainless steel and fiberglass wine tanks. The newer tasting room is near Salida and has views of Mt. Shavano. The tasting bar is in a gallery featuring many different works by local artists. Next to the gallery is the Twisted Cork Café owned and operated by their daughter and son-in-law. The restaurant was voted the best restaurant in Salida.

On the day of our visit, we tasted wines at the winery tasting room. One of the wines we tried included the Chardonnay 2004 that was aged in oak for nine months. The result was a crisp wine with light oak on the finish. Another wine was a blend of Riesling and Chardonnay. This wine had a light residual sugar with a long aftertaste. It would be lovely for a hot summer day and would pair well with quiche. Pinot Soleil 2004 was dry and I could easily visualize a sizzling steak with a glass of Pinot Soleil. Karl, the cellar master, commented about the wines saying, “Each one is your child.” Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 offered a fruit nose. It had a very fruity taste and a crisp finish with some tannin on the finish. There was a good balance of fruit, acid, alcohol and tannins. If you enjoy blackberry flavors, try the Blackberry Cabernet Franc 2006. This wine had a blackberry nose and taste with a bit of pepper on the taste. It was crisp with a very strong blackberry aftertaste. The 2006 Raspberry Merlot had a red color with a raspberry nose and taste ending with a crisp finish. The Angel Blush 2007, the first wine Mountain Spirit produced, was a blend of apple, pear, and raspberry. The color was a pale pink. It was light, refreshing and very fruity. The fruit explodes on the aftertaste. Mountain Spirit also produces an Apple ice dessert wine. It has an apple nose and flavor with a crisp finish and apple aftertaste.
According to Karl who has been with the winery since 1996, they want the winery known as the “winery that offers different wines.” When you visit, you will discover besides the typical wines also some unusual blends.
The winery is reliant on purchasing grapes from vineyards approximately five hours from the winery. The winery staff has been able to work out the logistics of the harvesting and receiving the grapes as cold as when they left the vineyards. There is a good relationship between the farmers and the winery. They realize the importance of providing the winery with quality grapes. All grapes for the winery are hand harvested.
Be sure to visit the gallery that serves as a tasting room and art gallery for local artists. There are many different items to admire.

Ouray, Box Canyon
SIX HOURS FROM BROOMFIELD

Ouray has been a special destination of world travelers for more than 100 years. This small intimate community is nestled in some of the most rugged and towering peaks of the Rockies. Set at the narrow head of a valley at 7,792 feet and surrounded on three sides with 13,000 foot snowcapped peaks - Ouray has been eloquently nicknamed the "Switzerland of America."
Remarkably, two-thirds of Ouray's original Victorian structures, both private and commercial, are still occupied, and have been lovingly restored in order to preserve their turn-of-the-century charm.
The Box Canyon Waterfall & Park is Ouray’s natural wonder—formed when the rushing waters of Canyon Creek eroded a deep and narrow boxed canyon through fault weakened limestone. The park's short trails are easily accessible from the southwest corner of town. You can reach the visitor center and entrance either by car or by foot. The lower trail, an easy 500-feet hike via a walkway and suspension bridge will lead you straight into the belly of the falls. You will be silenced by roaring water as the force of thousands of gallons a minute ricochet off a mix of rugged crags and smoothly eroded pre-Cambrian rock, rushing eighty feet to the canyon’s bottom.
Stop and soak up the beauty of the surrounding forests in one of the numerous sheltered picnic houses situated throughout the park. Some of the gazebos have grills and are perfect for a family gathering or for a peaceful place to get away with friends. Be sure to walk through the Visitor Center and see the interpretive exhibits on the geology, wildlife, rare plant life, and history of the area. From the visitor center, you can also take the short but steep hike to the bridge above the falls and look down on the fury of the water as it plummets into the canyon and, as an added treat, enjoy beautiful views of Ouray. The native plant loop is a short and level trail near the visitor center where you can enjoy the sights and sounds of the forest.
In 2001, this breathtaking park was designated an important bird watching area by the National Audubon Society. It supports one of the state’s largest populations of Black Swifts, a protected species. These birds nest in their preferred habitat— the canyon walls sheltered by overhanging rocks near waterfalls.
The Park is located at the west end of Third Avenue. To reach the entrance to the falls by foot, walk two blocks up the left fork at the end of Third Avenue. At the end of this quarter-mile moderately sloped hill, you will find the entrance to the Park and the Visitor Center. To drive from town, follow Hwy 550 south of Ouray, taking an immediate right onto CR 361 after the first hairpin turn. Follow the signs to the right, going over the Uncompahgre Gorge to the drive-in entrance.
There is a small admission to the Park. Fees are $3.00 for adults, $1.50 for children (5-12 years) and $2.50 for seniors (65+). Summer hours for this must-see park are 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.

FALL RIVER ROAD SCENIC DRIVE
For a half-day treat, take U.S. 34 west through the National Park’s entrance to Fall River Road, built in 1920. When you reach Endovalley, the road becomes gravel, one-way and uphill for nearly 10 miles.
Waterfalls, glacier deposits, icy pools and breathtaking views are all part of this trip. Because of the steep grades and switchbacks, it is not open to trailers or mobile homes. At the Alpine Visitors Center, turn left. Along the route, you will pass Trail Ridge Road’s high point. From Deer Ridge Junction, continue to Estes Park on scenic U.S. Hwy. 34 or U.S. Hwy. 36.
